When we train we assume that your opponent will be bigger, stronger, and faster than you.
We learn to rely on technique, timing and leverage rather than brutal strengths.
When training, Kumite matches are set up so a student learns to handle themselves when dealing with larger, older, stronger, and more experienced opponents. Every student in class gets to exchange techniques with every other student regardless of age, size, ability, or gender and if fortunate with Shihan. While training and learning we use light to medium contact and full safety gear head hands and feet with mouthpiece and groin cup. Each exchange is closely monitored. No face contact is allowed as is no direct punches to the head. If a student gets overwhelmed or frustrated I encourage them to so strong bushido or warrior spirit. If the child cries I encourage them to go in even get mad because you can't be sad and mad at the same time.
